Covenant Brethren

The Covenant Brethern Church is a movement from the Church of the Brethren.

An invitation that was sent out to a select groups of pastors and congregations is below.

Brother or Sister in Christ,

I pray all is well with you and your family. Please continue to pray for God's healing for the Church of the Brethren as we work through the Compelling Vision Process. Our God is a God of miracles, and He can bring a perfect resolve to our dividing issues. Please Pray, Pray, Pray!!!!!

Also, many folks have been asking questions about the "movement" that some of your Brethren brothers and sisters are involved with. There have been two meetings of concerned members of the COB regarding the fact that some of the local churches are exiting from our Denomination. With several congregations leaving the COB, it is the intent of this group to develop a "Brethren haven" for these churches in order that they may remain Brethren in name and practice and not be driven to an independent status or another denomination. If you would like to learn more about this, please feel free to join us at the next meeting. Everyone that is interested in this "movement" is welcome!! We will have this next gathering on November 16th at the Antioch Church of the Brethren,23502 Senedo Rd, Woodstock VA. The starting time is 9:00 am and we will be ending at 2:30 pm. Fellowship time and refreshments prior to the meeting will begin at 8:15 am. Lunch will be provided at no charge. An offering for cost of food etc. will be lifted. Since the attendance is expected to be much greater than the first two meetings, and the seating capacity of the church sanctuary is about 350, we are asking everyone to preregister using this link: Note: If/when we reach a capacity registration, this link will be closed,

Registration is now open and we would encourage you to register on line before Nov. 9th. This will allow time for proper planning for food services. If you do not have the availability to do this type of registration, please feel free to call and give me your name/s and number that will be attending. (phone number below) Please share this information and link with other individuals that may have interest in being kept informed and did not receive this email. It is very likely that some initial decisions for the organization, presently called "Association of Brethren Churches" will be voted on at this meeting. We are trying to set up a "live stream video" of the meeting for those that are unable to attend. We should know for sure if this is possible in the next couple of weeks. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions and pray for God to lead us in all we are about.

Hope to see you there.

May God richly bless you, Grover --

To The Leadership Team of the Church of the Brethren,

This letter is in response to your concerns related to the movement of Brethren leaving the Church of the Brethren. We can understand that this is unsettling and raises issues related to loyalty to Brethren Polity. It has been our desire since we were asked to serve on a Temporary Executive Board to be completely transparent and open to communication and counsel. We have tried to respond to every request for information that does not impinge on anyone’s personal information.

On the other hand, we share the concerns of Brethren who are moving in the direction of leaving the denomination and yet want to remain Brethren in practice and heart, but do not want to be completely independent. As you know there have been several public meetings where these matters are being discussed with few final decisions made. Other than the group naming themselves as Covenant Brethren Church (CBC), everything else is still a work in progress. The group is moving away from being exploratory, but not yet quite being intentional in its direction. A number of committees are working on structural and doctrinal matters. We have resisted using aggressive recruiting in trying to get people involved in this. But we do help with planning and oversight.

We remain open to the possibility that God will still do a work of renewal in the Church of the Brethren so that this movement would become irrelevant. In the meantime there is great disappointment that little is being done to hold anyone accountable to the positions of Annual Conference. And the result is that those who are promoting a sinful lifestyle are allowed to go on without much or any restraint. This situation continues year after year with no end in sight and some Brethren are simply finished with waiting.

We continue to give cautions and attitude checks so that if an outright division takes place, it will be as friendly as possible and without a display of bitterness and rancor. We would hope that you would be as helpful as possible from your end so that together this might be accomplished for the peace and benefit of all. It is our desire to continue to be open and transparent toward you as much as we possibly can. We also will continue to give counsel and guidance to the Covenant group as long as that is desired. You may share this information with whomever you wish. May God be glorified in all these matters.

With Christian concern,
